Cemeteries were considered outdoor sculpture galleries in the nineteenth century, and Savannahs Bonaventure, which also functioned as a public park, features many fine examples of this art form in the former plantation turned rural cemetery. Known for its scenic beauty since the 18th century, it has attracted notable visitors including John Muir and Edward Weston. Join Professor Maureen Burke for a narrated tour of this special historic site along the Wilmington River where the symbols and meaning of select monuments will be interpreted as each is examined as a conveyer of ideas central to understanding Victorian America.
